Second Union Missionary Baptist Church History
(Updated: December 12, 2021)

The Second Union Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1947 on Christmas Day at 1048 McAllister Street in San Francisco, California. The late Rev. J.J. Tibbs was elected as the church’s first pastor. After eighteen months, Rev. Tibbs resigned his pastorship and in 1949 Rev. Warren Thomas Adams, an associate minister at First Union Baptist Church in San Francisco, accepted the call to the pastorship of Second Union Missionary Baptist Church.

In 1951 the congregation relocated to 1365 Golden Gate Avenue with a membership of over 200 members. Under the steady and skillful guidance of Rev. Adams, being led by the Holy Spirit, Second Union Missionary Baptist Church continued its growth eventually to the point where the Golden Gate Avenue facility proved too small for the church’s expanding membership. In September 1968, the membership of Second Union marched from its Golden Gate Street location over the hills of Steiner Street to its present day location at 749 Page Street. With outstretched hands, the people of the community came forward, saying: “We are glad God has planted a church on Page Street.” It was because of this warm reception the congregation proclaimed: “FROM A DANCE HALL, TO A HOUSE OF PRAYER,” as we converted our new location edifice from a previously known dance hall into now a church sanctuary for the praise and worship of God.

Community outreach has been a foundational part of our church history. For 50 years our church maintained a weekly live radio broadcast of our worship service, ministering to many souls throughout the SF Bay Area. Also, our church has been recognized for its influential standing in the community, leading San Francisco Mayors - including The late Honorable Joseph Alioto, The late Honorable George Moscone, and The Honorable Willie Brown - to visit our church and deliver a community address to the congregation.

Over the years, a number of preachers have served and began their ministry at Second Union Missionary Baptist Church. Some have transitioned from this life including, our beloved Rev. LaVaughn Bobo, while others have gone on to minister or pastor other congregations. For 37 years one particular servant remained for God’s special service at Second Union. In June 1997 Rev. Calvin Ellison was unanimously voted Minister-in-Charge when sudden illness befell Pastor Adams. During this time, Rev. Ellison, along with the late Rev. LaVaughn Bobo were a great source of strength to both the congregation and Pastor Adams. Much like Aaron and Hur in Exodus 17, many held the pastor steady before the Lord while Rev. Ellison and the late Rev. Bobo forged ahead, constantly reminding the congregation of the Pastor’s instructions from the Lord and the Lord’s assurance that He would never leave us nor forsake us.

Following Rev. Ellison's call to leadership and along with a selected committee, Rev. Ellison led a major building renovation of God’s house of worship including a new roof, painting, new carpeting, remodel of the bathrooms, rewiring of the electrical system, new lighting and remodel of the kitchen/dining room.

In 2002, the Lord called home his faithful servant, Rev. W.T. Adams, after 55 years of preaching the Gospel. A Special Business Meeting of the Second Union Missionary Baptist Church was called in July 2002, and Rev. Rance Whiteside of the Good Hope Baptist Church presided over the meeting. It was moved by the late Deacon J.T. Mattox and seconded by the late Deacon Freddie Chase that Rev. Calvin Ellison, Sr. become the Pastor of the Second Union Missionary Baptist Church. The vote of the membership was unanimous. A two-day installation service culminated on August 11, 2002.

And so the ministry of Second Union has continued. With a great passion for helping those in need, Second Union launched its Bread of Life program in December 2000. Since then, each year during the Holiday Season, the congregation provides bags of food for needy families in San Francisco reaching between 100-200 families annually.

For 74 years, Second Union Missionary Baptist Church has welcomed and witnessed to multitudes of souls, winning them over to Christ, baptizing them into the Christian faith, with the mission of:
· Carrying out the teachings of Christ
· Exalting God
· Encouraging Christians toward spiritual maturity
· Equipping God's people for Ministry
· Winning souls for the Kingdom of God

So we thank God Almighty that our church has been preserved all these years and that God has allowed us to be partakers in His great plan for mankind’s salvation.
